Keep Pounding - Cancer Messed With the Wrong Team

Posted by Rachel Wood on
“When I found out I had cancer, there were two things I could do: quit or keep pounding. I'm a fighter. I kept pounding. You're fighters, too. Keep pounding!” -Sam Mills (1959-2005)

Tonight the Carolina Panthers will be honoring Sam Mills, the former Carolina linebacker who had been diagnosed with intestinal cancer hours before showing up to coach the linebackers for the 2003 preseason finale. Given only a couple of months to live, Mills didn't miss a game that season. Every player will have a patch with #51 on the back of their helmets for Thursday Night Football.

Mills passed away in 2005 at the age of 45, but his #KeepPounding message lives strong as the team mantra, the locker room inspiration, the pre-game drum chant, and the fan cheer.

Do not quit. Fight hard. KEEP POUNDING.
